I believe it is essential to guard what you allow in through the eyes and ears. The flesh is a powerful enemy and what you watch can become fuel for the flesh. Once the image is in your head, you'll have a hard time removing it.

I'm all for for understanding the world we live in and not just the nice side, but rather than watch a movie from the comfort of my home, I just simply have to open the door and engage with real people. However well directors and producers create movies, they are still mostly fiction. As entertainment, I would not encourage any believer to watch the movies you describe. I've found ministry to those who suffer with nightmares, lustful thoughts, violent thoughts and suicidal thoughts, the roots can often be traced to years of watching such television.

I appreciate the world has moved on considerably since you wrote this post and you may not hold this view any longer, but felt it important to bring a viewpoint from the other side.Simonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00215671854769806618noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949629946811250058.post-72801904680238828242016-04-25T09:42:41.761+01:002016-04-25T09:42:41.761+01:00Thanks for the comment, one quick thought back at ...Thanks for the comment, one quick thought back at yer. Results from acts of kindness alone? I think it is probably impossilbe to trace a demonstrable line of cause and effect when it comes to people becoming disciples. I also think it is important that we weave our gospel tapestries using all three threads: being, doing and saying. Then we get a rich articulation of the good news. The red of our speaking stands out more clearly against the green of our doing. When this happens it's hard to say which aspect of our gospel weaving was responsible for any particular response. I also think that we tend to conceive this in overly indvidualistic terms. What matters most, it seems to me, is the communal evocation of the gospel that we spin through the corporate lives of churches, and even then not just individual congregations but networks of congregations across the country and even (if this is not getting too grand!) throughout our world. We hang our tapestries in our local communities but also display on the frame of society at large. Starting to come over all poetic. It's a...Glen, thank you for your wise comments. It's all too easy to get stuck in the binary 'either speak up or shut up' trap. Evangelism must be our lives... An acted-out parable to the good news of Jesus - his influence on our lives, relationships, attitudes, politics,... An act of kindness is as much gospel as a sermon...and perhaps even more so. I find it striking that Peter's defence to the religious authorities in Acts 4:8 is that all he and John were guilty of was an act of kindness.
The only real question I have...and it's one I have struggled with for years...is that in my experience multiple acts of kindness, generosity, compassion have been a blessing to many people but I couldn't necessarily point to many who have become disciples as a result. Don't get me wrong...I think that acts of compression, kindness, etc should be for their own sake...and not for an alterior motive of converting people. But nonetheless...Maybe I can't shake off the notion that I should be able to point to a harvest resulting from my living the values and ethos of the kingdom... I'm also intrigued that those involved in Seventy-Two - the WBA / SWBA (?) venture seeking to encourage mission - speak specifically of 'intentionality' in mission... This (in my mind) seems to be trying to blur the line between doing good as a natural result of living the life of the Kingdom of God and deliberately wanting to do good SO THAT people will become disciples of Jesus.
Thanks again Glen. For generations...Absolutely agree with you, Glen.

For generations UK society (perhaps more accurately English society) has been hoodwinked by the wealthy into believing that it is good for the rest of us support their economic aspirations - even at the expense of our own. This message is massively reinforced by a media industry largely owned by the same group. It crosses party boundaries, which is one of the reasons the last Labour government was such a disappointment.

If Labour can't their head round this, is it time for a new social democrat political grouping?Ian Brewertonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949629946811250058.post-4360373596647511392014-07-10T19:56:52.518+01:002014-07-10T19:56:52.518+01:00We'll put and thanks for your support, Glen.

Do you have them at BUGB Assembly?

Glad to see Spring Harvest did away with PPs this year (first time ever I think) In fact, when I did that "text, wait a moment, stand up, wave" fun thing with Steve Holmes this year at Skegness he was sitting away up the back - and he's an Important Leadership Team Person at Spring Harvest.

Regarding dress. I had to carry a wee business card to get into hospitals as scary Staff Nurses simply refused to believe that a young(ish) woman was doing a pastoral visit. They expected me to have grey hair, a dog collar and to be wearing muted shades of brown, olive green and grey, not purple docs. I'm not entitled to be a dog collar wearer here but even if I was I just couldn't do it anyway - blend in unless or until you need to be identified for legit purpose.

LynnAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949629946811250058.post-27255539523219231472013-04-03T17:07:47.683+01:002013-04-03T17:07:47.683+01:00I'm in favour of leaving things as sober and p...I'm in favour of leaving things as sober and plain as is appropriate or possible, depending on the cultural context. But I also feel that there is merit in the church being visible to the rest of the world, and if this means wearing a collar in public, I think we should do so. As a part-time non-stipendiary Anglican, I don't always wear my collar when I'm going about my non-church activities, but I usually wear a small lapel gold cross.Eamonnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09840933626905620913noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949629946811250058.post-91105357655470633872013-02-10T22:47:24.836+00:002013-02-10T22:47:24.836+00:00I hate being called a lady.
