But I agree; we need to believe in the art of persuasion - though I may not be very good at it. I attended a seminar the other day which was partly about 'the New Atheism'. We were told that the new atheists, particularly Sam Harris in the US, favour 'conversational intolerance' with regards to religious faith - i.e. instead of being required to 'respect' someone's religious beliefs, there ought to be the same freedom to challenge as there is vis-a-vis people's peculiar/dangerous beliefs about politics/race/conspiracies etc. And I agree - but many people seemed worried. I think we need to be subjected to tough questions, to help us sharpen our responses. To be willing to persuade others is also to risk being exposed to what others think: it's a must. But then I was already. I ...Well I'm persuaded. But then I was already. I think for me the dividing line is to do with the questions that we are asked. To press on someone an answer to a question that we think they should be asking is unwarranted; to persuade them that Christ is the (surprising) heart of the answer to the questions they really are asking is legitimate.Bobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12569319536475839604noreply@blogger.com
