However I reckon it's imp...Not in these terms. However I reckon it's important to distinguish holiness from ceremonial purity. They do deal, to my mind convincingly with the idea that while holiness is essentially about otherness, goddishness, God's people being different because they belong to God NONETHELESS (and this is the key point) the holiness that YHWH demands is ethical holiness because that's the way that YHWH is. Seems to me that Borg is wrong (!) I take it that Jesus is functioning within the prophetic tradition and calling Israel back to TRUE holiness - of which compassion is a crucial component. Israel, and the church's besetting sin is getting holiness wrong.<br /><br />Separateness? The priest and the Levite were concerned with holiness - not touching blood, a dead body - the Samaratan was compassionate. <br /><br />I'm sure there are other ways to understand holiness.
